Jazz dance from the 20s, 30s and 40s was the authentic expression of an oppressed people. Finding freedom in the body when there was no true freedom in their life conditions, African-Americans gave us this way to move that connects viscerally to jazz music

This is an embodied music – created to make you dance – to move emotions through the body.  To liberate feelings and expression that needed an outlet.

The swing beat is the beat of your heart.  Just as healthy heart rate has variability between inhaling and exhaling, a swing beat is flexible and malleable.  You can move ahead of the beat and you can play with movement very much behind the beat.  Each will give you a different body sense.

Movement and shapes in the body express different ideas, feelings, and energies.  Exploring jazz in an embodied way means to connect with your own body through a new language.  Learning a new language gives your brain a chance to comprehend the world in a novel way, and in this case, in an embodied sense-filled way.
